Following on from two successful solo album launches with A Country Mile and The Party Faithful, James Atkin returns for a 3rd solo outing with Popcorn Storm.
Almost two years in the making, James has been putting in the hours at his home studio, fine-tuning tracks and shaping an album that flows from start to finish and says he has “come on a long way from the first two solo albums, both in songwriting and producing” and while not a concept album as we know it, he has managed to mould it all into “one continuous theme.”
The Ivor Novello nominated songwriter is probably best known for his work as EMF’s frontman and the voice behind the chart topping 90’s hit Unbelievable, but he has remained active in the music scene ever since, performing in various guises with acts like Bentley Rhythm Ace, Beauty School, Cooler and Asbo Kid.
James eventually settled down in the Yorkshire Dales for a quiet life as a high school music teacher but when that artistic itch resurfaced he began working on his own music again, laying the foundations for his first adventure as a solo artist and has been loving the independence that comes with it.
Working solo on the album from writing to production has given James the scope to craft something in his own unique style, going back down the electronic path to what he loves most, using old school drum machines and analog synths while still keeping it song based with his distinct mix of vocals, melodies and hooks.
There is also collaboration on the track ‘Stay Classy’ with old EMF songwriting partner Ian Dench, who has co-writing credits for the likes of Beyonce, the Prodigy and Florence and the Machine.
Popcorn Storm is available to pre-order now on CD and digital download exclusively through JamesAtkinMusic with the official release set for April 21st 2019.
